On July 11, construction of the first wind turbine foundation was completed at the Vinh Long V1-3 and V1-5&6 Phase II offshore wind power projects in Vietnam, EPC-contracted by GEDI.
Located in the offshore waters of Vinh Long Province, Vietnam, the project cluster has a total installed capacity of 128 MW and utilizes Chinese-made 8.X MW wind turbines. It is currently the offshore wind power project with the largest unit capacity, monopile diameter, and monopile weight in Vietnam and even Southeast Asia. Upon completion, it is expected to generate 400 million kWh of electricity annually, equivalent to saving 116,900 tons of standard coal and reducing CO₂ emissions by 311,000 tons. This will help Vietnam increase its share of clean energy and promote regional green, low-carbon development.
The water depth at the site is only about 3 meters, shallower than other intertidal projects of its kind in Vietnam, posing significant construction challenges. Moreover, the individual monopiles weighing nearly 700 tons. The project team coordinated the international deployment of advanced equipment, including large construction vessels and hydraulic hammers. By securing a bottom-seated construction vessel with a draft of only 3.5 meters and seizing the tidal window for positioning, the team successfully and efficiently completed the first wind turbine foundation.
