World's Largest Offshore Converter Station Successfully Installed

On June 4, a key breakthrough was achieved in the centralized transmission project for the Yangjiang Qingzhou V and VII Offshore Wind Farms, built by GEDI under an EPC contract. The project's offshore converter station, the largest of its kind worldwide and named "the Heart of the SeaWind", was successfully installed over 70 km offshore and mated to a 10,000-ton jacket structure with millimeter-level precision.

Located in Yangxi County, Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, this project is currently the offshore wind power flexible DC (VSC-HVDC) transmission project with the highest voltage level and largest transmission capacity in the world. It is tasked with bundling and centrally transmitting clean electricity from 2,000 MW of offshore wind farms. Upon full completion, the project will deliver approximately 6 billion kWh of green electricity annually, equivalent to reducing CO₂ emissions by about 4.944 million tons per year. It will support the development of a 10 GW-class offshore wind power base in Yangjiang and facilitate the transformation and upgrading of energy structure, providing an engineering demonstration for the large-capacity, long-distance, large-scale centralized transmission of deep-water offshore wind power.

"The Heart of the SeaWind" is the world's first ±500 kV, 2,000 MW flexible DC offshore converter station, standing at the technical forefront of both VSC-HVDC and marine engineering. The GEDI technical team achieved groundbreaking innovations, adopting a world-first compact ±500 kV flexible DC transmission topology. For the first time globally, the team overcame the technical challenges of an offshore ±500 kV flexible DC system, developed and applied multiple core devices, including offshore low-loss, lightweight converter valves, and delivered a fully operational ±500 kV flexible DC converter platform. Using refined collaborative design methods and digital design tools, the team proposed a next-generation offshore flexible DC converter station design and carried out full-process weight optimization, significantly reducing the platform's weight per unit of power output.

To address nearshore infrastructure gaps, complex sea conditions, and the massive converter station, GEDI and partners adopted an onshore pre-assembly and float-over installation scheme, achieving multiple breakthroughs in ship loading, transport, dynamic positioning, and precision mating to improve construction efficiency and engineering quality. As the EPC contractor, GEDI coordinated the float-over plan and feasibility assessments from the design stage. Guided by refined design, GEDI led the parameter setting and drawing iterations, and defined transport and installation control standards to produce a viable plan. During installation, GEDI strictly controlled key technical parameters and coordinate all work sequences to ensure the precise installation of the 10,000-ton steel structure under complex deep-sea conditions.
