On November 12, UK Minister of State for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear Lord Patrick Vallance and his delegation visited GEDI and the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre. Huang Jianmei, General Manager of GEDI, and Fan Yongchun, Deputy General Manager of GEDI and Director of the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre, met with the delegation.
Patrick Vallance explored GEDI and the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre's efforts to advance carbon reduction and near-zero emission technologies, commending their achievements. He noted that CCUS technology is a critical driver for near-zero emissions and clean energy transition, now advancing towards large-scale adoption. He expressed hope that both countries would deepen collaboration in technology and engineering, foster exchange, align industry, pursue policy research, demonstrate cluster projects, and recognize shared standards, making meaningful strides against global climate change.
Huang Jianmei highlighted the significant achievements of the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre since its launch, including advancing international collaboration, turning research into practical results, and demonstrating projects. She emphasized CCUS technology as essential for effective emissions reduction, encouraging China and the UK to further technical exchange, align standards, and accelerate joint project implementation. She also noted substantial opportunities for collaboration in offshore wind power and other fields, calling for a closer partnership to contribute more wisdom and strength to global low-carbon progress.
In 2013, with strong backing from the National Development and Reform Commission and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre was officially established at GEDI. Over the past 12 years, the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre has advanced CCUS technology research and application, broadened its influence, and driven the launch of pioneering technologies and world-first projects.
Representatives from the UK Minister of State for Science, Research, and Innovation, UK Research and Innovation, Royal Society, Universities UK, British Embassy in China, British Consulate General in Guangzhou, as well as staff from GEDI's Science and Technology Information Department, Power Generation Engineering Company, and the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre, participated in the event.
